Biography

 

Jacquelyne Thoni Howard is a Senior Professor of Practice and the Director of Experiential Learning at CAIDS. She is also a Suzanne & Stephen Weiss Tulane Presidential Fellow for Teaching Excellence. At CAIDS, she teaches Introduction to Data, Data Visualization, GIS and Mapping Global Issues, and Data Ethics, Privacy, and Governance. She also directs internships and student programming at CAIDS.

As a historian, her work, in teaching, administration, research, and mentoring, centers on data literacy, critical data studies, the history of data and technology (STS), and the digital humanities. She uses the historical frameworks of gender, race, empire, and family to situate this work. Thoni Howard is a founding editor, with Clare Daniel, of the award-winning guide The Feminist Pedagogy Project. Inspired by the guide, she co-edited an edited volume titled Feminist Pedagogy for Teaching Online (Athabasca University Press, June 2025). She is also a co-director of the This Beautiful Sisterhood of Books digital archival recovery project with Kate Adams. She has published works about developing digital humanities and digital recovery projects, convening DH communities, and analyzing surveillance practices.

Prior to joining CAIDS, Thoni Howard taught interdisciplinary subjects as a certified secondary teacher and courses in History and Gender Studies at the University of Maryland University College, Fordham University, Loyola University New Orleans, and Tulane University. She also has extensive professional experience in instructional design and educational technology.

She earned a Ph.D. in U.S. History from Fordham University, an M.A. in History from the University of San Diego, and a B.A. in History with a minor in secondary education from Loyola University New Orleans.
