Biography

 

Jacquelyne Thoni Howard is an inaugural Professor of Practice, the Associate Director of Student Engagement, and a Suzanne & Stephen Weiss Tulane Presidential Fellow at the Connolly Alexander Institute for Data Science. At CAIDS, she teaches Introduction to Data, Data Visualization, and GIS and Mapping Global Issues. She also directs student programming within the CAIDS Data Lab, including the Data Research Internship Program, the Data Peer Mentor Program, the Data Help Desk Program, and the Data Ambassador Council.  

 

As a historian, her teaching, research, and mentorship centers on data literacy, critical data studies, the history of data, science and technology studies, and the digital humanities. Her work often focuses on the cultural and social implications of data using the frameworks of gender and race and on applying equitable data practices to data projects. Thoni Howard is a founding editor, with Clare Daniel, of the award-winning guide Feminist Pedagogy for Teaching Online. With her fellow editors, she co-edited a collection of essays titled Feminist Pedagogy for Teaching Online from the University of Athabasca Press, which is forthcoming in November of 2024. She has published works about surveillance and student privacy and convening digital humanities communities using feminist lab practices. She is also the technical director of the This Beautiful Sisterhood of Books Project with Kate Adams.

 

Prior to joining CAIDS, Thoni Howard taught interdisciplinary subjects as a certified secondary teacher and courses in history and gender studies at the University of Maryland University College, Fordham University, Loyola University New Orleans, and at Tulane University. She also has gained extensive professional experience in the fields of instructional design and educational technology in higher education. She earned a Ph.D. in U.S. History from Fordham University, a M.A. in History from the University of San Diego, and a B.A. in History with a minor in secondary education from Loyola University New Orleans.
