DATA 1010: Introduction to Data
This course aims to provide students with an overview of what data is, how it is used correctly and incorrectly, how it is found, stored, and managed, and how it can be used as a basis for decision making and analysis. The overall goal of this course is to increase data literacy, such that students are more confidently able to work with the increasing amounts of data in their lives, jobs, and academic careers.
Course Goals
- Learn how to identify limitations of data sources and analytics.
- Accurately interpret data presented in graphical or table form.
- Represent data accurately.
- Recognize misleading or inappropriate data representations.
This 3 credit hour course satisfies the "Formal Reasoning" Core Curriculum Requirement, has no prerequisites, and is open to all students. Sections are taught by CAIDS Professors of Practice, Lisa Dilks, Jacquelyne Thoni Howard, and John Levendis in the Fall and Spring semesters.
