DATA 2030: Data Visualization
This course provides an overview of the different creative and analytical theories and techniques for understanding and developing data visualizations, including maps, graphs, charts, and interactive tools such as dashboards. Students of all skill levels are welcome, and all data visualization skills will be taught in class.
Course Goals
- Examine theories, methods, and principles for creating data visualizations.
- Read and discuss key works by scholars for visually communicating data narratives.
- Find, analyze, and visualize datasets using open-source tools.
- Develop a data visualization exhibit that includes an array of data visualization methods such as charts, maps, tables, and other visual representations of data.
- Consider the societal role that data visualizations play in validating knowledge while exploring ethical concerns and critiques around communicating arguments visually.
This 3 credit hour course satisfies both the "Formal Reasoning" and "Social & Behavioral Sciences" Core Curriculum Requirements, has no prerequisites, and is open to all students. Section(s) are taught by Jacquelyne Thoni Howard, CAIDS Professor of Practice.
