DATA 3520: Data Analysis

This course provides an overview of the statistical tools commonly used to analyze quantitative data. Topics include describing data, statistical inferences, statistical significance, hypothesis testing, and regression analyses. Concepts are presented in the context of real-world examples using publicly available data sets.

Course Goals

  • Understanding how to use appropriate analytical techniques and interpret the results of statistical analyses for variables with different levels of measurement.
  • Comprehending methodology, including the underlying theory, assumptions, and mechanics of how each analytical tool works, is discussed, along with the appropriate interpretation of results.
  • Introducing students to statistical software.

This 3 credit hour course satisfies the "Formal Reasoning" Core Curriculum Requirement and has no prerequisites. Students of all skill levels are welcome, including those with limited or no statistical, mathematical, or programming backgrounds. All data analysis skills will be taught in class. Section(s) are taught by Lisa Dilks, CAIDS Professor of Practice.
