Call for Proposals
The Connolly Alexander Institute for Data Science in partnership with Newcomb Institute calls for data-related project proposals of Tulane graduate students, staff, faculty, and community partners to be considered for sponsorship by the Data Research Internship Program during the Fall 2024-Spring 2025 academic year. If selected, as a project partner, the Data Research Interns through the Data Lab, funded by CAIDS and Newcomb Institute, will work with you in providing technical expertise and meeting project objectives with the goal of completing your project using digital scholarship principles. As an interdisciplinary program, we encourage project partners from all fields to apply.
Scrum Model
To model standards in data industries, interns work on a scrum team, an agile framework. The team works together on multiple projects at a time. The week-to-week workflows are managed by those working in the Data Lab.
If the proposal is accepted, the project partner will work with Dr. Jacquelyne Howard to create a project plan and work with the Product Developer Intern throughout the semester. The Product Developer Intern will continuously communicate with the product owner about the team's progress. Owners will be invited throughout the semester to join the team meetings and open houses.
Eligibility
Tulane faculty, graduate students, staff, or New Orleans community members who incorporate or want to incorporate data into their research and advocacy work are eligible.
We are looking for data research projects that focus on discovery skills such as data collection, data clean-up, data analysis, data visualization, data/science communication and have a social or cultural framework such as gender, race, sexuality, class, environment, and/or disability.
Project partners agree to work within the Scrum model framework and communicate closely with the product developer intern by providing feedback. They also will allow CAIDS and Newcomb Institute to promote the project and interns' work through poster development, write-ups shared on social media and The Lab Zine and acknowledge the sponsorship of CAIDS and Newcomb Institute support of your project in any publications and websites relating to the project. Project partners will list the names of the Digital Research team including Lab faculty and staff, GAs, and interns on your site and promotional materials. We ask that project partners attend the data poster session and other invited events, as possible.
This program accepts proposals throughout the semester on a rolling basis. To learn more and apply, send a 100-word proposal to Jacquelyne Thoni Howard, Ph.D. (jhoward8@tulane.edu).
